Preventive Heart Screening

General Adult Population (>16 yrs old)

There is a high percentage (30%) of the population in Mauritius suffering from heart diseases, driven principally by an unhealthy diet combined with increasing work related stress. Sudden death due to undetected cardiac complications, particularly among young adults is also on the rise and has become a major concern in our country.

Our modern diagnostic services can contribute in identifying cardiovascular diseases or heart structural abnormalities, through regular heart screenings (Specialised Echocardiography + ECG) and follow-ups of cardiac patients, which in turn will help to reduce further unwanted cardiac complications and decrease early death rate. For Men and Women above 35yrs old, it is imperative for them to also have a Carotid Ultrasound scan in order to identify whether they are at risk of having a heart attack or fatal stroke in the future.

Yearly heart screening recommended to avoid unwanted cardiac complications.

Diabetic Patients

People with diabetes are more likely to develop heart disease at a younger age, therefore early detection of such cardiac pathologies may save lives

Why is it important to have regular heart screening in diabetic patients?

Diabetic heart disease refers to heart disease that develops in people who have diabetes. People who have diabetes:

  • Are at higher risk for heart disease
  • May develop heart disease at a younger age
  • May have more heart complications
  • Are at higher risk of heart attack

Diabetic heart disease may include:

  • Coronary artery disease: Build-up of a waxy substance called plaque in the arteries that supply oxygen–rich blood to the heart muscle. Plaques tend to narrow the arteries and reduces blood flow to the heart muscle which in turn causes a heart attack
  • Heart failure: A condition in which your heart fails to pump enough blood to meet your body's needs, thus leading to limitation of normal activities
  • Diabetic cardiomyopathy: A disease that damages the structure and function of the heart over time which can lead to further unwanted cardiac complications

Regular Heart Screening for Athletes

Athletes are generally considered the healthiest people in society, seemingly invulnerable and often capable of extraordinary physical achievement. Sudden cardiac death in athletes is a common and tragic event and its impact is devastating to their family and the wider community. These deaths are usually caused by undiagnosed cardiovascular abnormalities caused by intense exercise training. Our cardiac diagnostic services can help these athletes to alter, if necessary, and maximise their training regime without causing too much harm to the heart. It is very important for athletes to get their heart checked on a regular basis in order to avoid unwanted cardiac complications in the future.

Intense exercise training can change the structure and function of the heart, therefore yearly heart screening is imperative to avoid cardiac complications or even sudden cardiac death

Holter Analysis

In medicine, a Holter monitor is a portable device for continuously monitoring various electrical activity of the heart for at least 24 hours (often for 7 days at a time).

The Holter's most common use is for monitoring heart activity (electrocardiography or ECG). Its extended recording period is sometimes useful for observing occasional cardiac arrhythmias (abnormal heart electrical activity), in symptomatic patients, which would be difficult to identify in a shorter period of time.

For patients having more transient symptoms, a cardiac event monitor which can be worn for a month or more can be used.

Pediatric Echocardiography

Pediatric Echocardiography, commonly referred to as pediatric echo, is today the primary imaging tool in the diagnosis and assessment of heart diseases in infants and children.

This specialised procedure, which uses high frequency ultrasound, is mainly used for the detection of congenital heart disease (heart defect present at birth). This technique is also used for the evaluation of murmurs and is an essential tool to evaluate the effectiveness of medical therapy and surgical treatments.
